Our Story

Why do we exist?

Reptiles are among the most neglected and misunderstood pets. Many are bought impulsively, housed improperly, or abandoned when they become inconvenient. Veterinary costs are high, and specialist care is essential. We’re here to change that narrative—with compassion, knowledge, and action.

The Sussex Reptile Rescue Centre was originally started in June 2024 by current founder Benjamin Checkley. With the increasing stories of reptiles being dumped, abandoned and looking for new homes on Social media and the Local News, Benjamin saw the need for setting up a Reptile rescue charity which works to support these magnificent and often misunderstood creatures.

The Sussex Reptile Rescue Centre became a registered Charity in September 2024, and so our journey began!
